"Life purpose is the reason for your current existence. It is what brings meaning to your life." -Tim Huynh
When it comes to fulfilling your purpose in life, some people believe it’s about achieving some grandiose mission and making an impressive impact. This leaves the rest of us thinking if we don’t have something huge to accomplish, that must mean I don’t have a purpose in life.
That could not be further from the truth. The fact of the matter is everyone has a purpose to fulfill and it doesn’t have to change the world.
So let’s redefine what purpose is. Instead of defining it as some spiritual quest or grandiose mission to change the world, let’s define purpose as simply seeking fulfilment in what we do for a living. Fulfillment in the sense that we experience states of joy, happiness, contentment and flow on a regular basis in our chosen line of work.
Imagine waking up everyday feeling this way and you feel passionate about the work you do? That is how you should define living a life of purpose because you get to do what you love and it brings you joy and happiness. Because imagine if everyone in the world felt this way? What would happen to society? Depression and suicide rates would plummet, there would be more peace and abundance in the world, and the world would become a much better place.
But you might be asking how do I achieve that? I have no idea what I want to do. Don’t worry, there’s a formula that can help you.
In this formula, there’s five key ingredients.
1. Values4. Impact
The whole idea is being able to find fulfillment in each of these areas. Let’s explore them further:
Values:
Values are essentially what’s most important to you. It’s what drives you and inspires you in life. When you live in alignment with your values, it creates emotional fulfillment . For example, if family was one of your core values, then if you could live a life where you spent a lot more time with family, it would lead you to feeling more fulfilled. If you had a value of learning, you would feel fulfilled when you were able to engage in activities where you were
learning. Therefore it’s important to discover what your core values are and live in alignment with them or be doing things that move you towards being able to live in line with them. If you are not living in alignment, you experience a level of dissatisfaction, frustration and unfulfillment because you’re not being true to who you are and moving towards what’s most important to you.
Passion:
Passion is what lights you up in your life when you’re engaged in doing it. It’s different from values in that it’s an area of strong interest for you. Think of it this way, there’s a mega magazine website and it has a magazine on every possible genre, topic, interest or hobby in the world. What magazines would you pick up to read? Business magazines? Interior decorating magazine? Baking magazine? The magazines you pick up could be a passion for you. Now the whole idea is to find what you’re most passionate about and start doing more of it. Reason being is if you can engage in what you’re passionate about, it creates mental fulfillment because you are doing something that interests you, excites you and stimulates you. You don’t have to force yourself to do it because you are naturally motivated to do it.
Gifts And Talents:
Gifts and talents are your natural strengths. Everyone has certain things they do which come so effortlessly. For example, a woodworker that can make any piece of wood into a masterpiece, or a pianist whose finger effortlessly glide across the keys to produce magnificent melodies, or it could be the chef that understands the delicate textures to cook up a culinary delight. There are certain strengths and abilities you have which are unique and special to you. When you use your gifts, you find yourself in flow and you lose track of time. This leads to physical fulfillment because you are doing something physical which brings you enjoyment.
Impact - Social Fulfillment
Impact is how you are going to make a contribution. Now there’s a special equation to determine how you will make an impact. The equation is as follows:
In the area of [insert passions], I [insert gifts and strengths] to [insert what kind of contribution you’d like to make] and live in alignment with [insert values].
The contribution you’d like to make can be for one person to the environment or animals or the world. It’s really up to you how big of an impact or contribution you want to make. This is where you receive spiritual fulfillment in terms of fulfilling your service to society one way or another. Spiritual teachers and texts promote the concept of selfless service and what better way to do this than to share you gifts in the areas of your passion and live in alignment with your values!
Vehicle: Financial Fulfillment
The last area is vehicle which is how you can get paid for what you do. This leads to financial fulfillment. Your passions, gifts and values are unique to you like your fingerprint therefore YOU are the only person who makes this type of impact - no one else. In saying that, look at your area of passion and see what ways you can provide your gifts and get paid for it. You’d be surprised at avenues of abundance that open up.
When it comes down to it, the core of your purpose is to bring you fulfillment, happiness, joy and passion to your life. It requires you to have the courage to ignore the naysayers and go after what you really want with determination and focus. At the very beginning, it may be scary but on the other side of fear is the life you are dreaming about. So deeply explore the 5 areas mentioned above and you will soon find yourself discovering your purpose in life.
